When love for pets meets allergy

A dog greeting you at the door or a cat purring contentedly on the sofa can turn an apartment into a real home. For allergy sufferers, however, this idyllic picture can be more complicated. The good news is that allergies and pets are not mutually exclusive; you simply need to think carefully about the environment and everyday habits.

What really causes allergies and whether hairless breeds help

Many people believe that pet hair is the main problem in pet allergies. "In reality, most allergic reactions are caused by proteins found in the animal's saliva, skin flakes, sebum or urine. Hair mainly acts as a carrier of these allergens in the environment," explains MUDr. Tomáš Slizs. These allergens bind to dust, settle in textiles and spread through the air very easily. This means that even a perfectly tidy apartment can still be difficult for an allergy sufferer if allergens are not removed in the right way. The doctor also points out another common myth: "So-called hypoallergenic breeds do not actually exist. Even hairless cats or dogs produce allergens originating in the skin and saliva, not in the hair itself."

Clear rules at home make a difference

One of the most important steps is to set clear boundaries. The bedroom should remain a pet-free rest zone, because good-quality sleep in a clean environment can significantly ease symptoms. It also makes sense to limit a pet's access to the sofa or bed, or to use easily washable covers. Allergists say the environment is often underestimated: "Even an animal with relatively lower allergen production can create a high allergen load in a small, poorly ventilated and incorrectly cleaned home with carpets and textiles. Conversely, a well-managed environment can significantly reduce the amount of allergens," says MUDr. Slizs.

Pet care as part of the solution

Caring for the pet itself also makes a major difference. Regular brushing, ideally outdoors or at least on a balcony, helps remove loose hair and some allergens before they enter the interior. Occasional bathing can also help with some animals. It is equally important not to forget washing pet beds, blankets and other textiles that come into contact with the animal, because this is where allergens accumulate most. Veterinarian MVDr. Milan Bednář confirms that consistent care is often crucial: "In many cases there are ways to make living together manageable without the animal having to leave the home. But it requires discipline and, above all, a different approach to household hygiene and increased coat care, such as regular brushing and bathing with specialist products."

A home that breathes with you

When it comes to the home itself, a simple rule applies: the fewer places where dust can accumulate, the better. Hard floors such as wood or vinyl are significantly more practical for allergy sufferers than carpets. Heavy curtains, lots of decorations and excess textiles may feel cosy, but they also act as allergen traps. Air purifiers with high-quality filtration, regular ventilation and washing bed linen at higher temperatures can also help.

Experts also point out that animal allergens are extremely persistent. Pet allergens are very difficult to remove and can remain in a home for months. 

Cleaning that really works

A key factor that is often overlooked is the cleaning method itself. This determines whether allergens actually leave the home or are merely moved from place to place. Conventional vacuums often disperse fine particles back into the air, so shortly after cleaning they can settle again on surfaces and return to the breathing zone. In practice, you clean, but the effect is only partial. From this perspective, a central vacuum makes a great deal of sense. Unlike conventional devices, it carries the collected dust, dust mites and allergens through pipework and exhausts them completely outside the living areas. There is therefore no draught, turbulence or recirculation of filtered dust in the room during cleaning. For an allergy sufferer this is a huge difference; the air in the home feels and genuinely is cleaner. Fine allergens do not return to the interior and their concentration gradually falls. The result is not just a feeling of cleanliness but a genuinely healthier environment, particularly valuable for allergy sufferers. Modern central vacuums also offer special attachments designed specifically for pet care. These allow loose hair to be gently vacuumed directly from the animal's coat without dispersing it around the apartment. For many dogs and cats this is a surprisingly pleasant form of "brushing" and significantly reduces the amount of allergens that would otherwise enter the environment. The veterinarian adds an important detail: "Instead of simply stirring hair and skin flakes into the air during conventional brushing, you remove them immediately at the source. From an allergy sufferer's perspective, that is ideal. From a veterinarian's perspective, however, you also need to consider the animal's psychological comfort and introduce vacuuming sensitively and gradually. That brings us back to the central vacuum: thanks to its quiet operation, you can remove dust and loose allergens directly from the dog's coat more easily and with less stress. It is one of the most effective tools we can have at home in the fight against allergies." 

When compromise is not enough

Although modern measures can help significantly, experts warn that living together is not safe in every case. "If someone has moderate to severe symptoms and allergic asthma, all of these measures are only factors contributing to improvement. The primary solution should be complete avoidance of contact with the allergen," warns allergist Tomáš Slizs. For many people, however, even small environmental changes bring significant relief. The combination of good habits, thorough cleaning and thoughtful household care can ultimately determine whether an allergy sufferer and their four-legged companion can live happily together for many years.
