Health begins where dust ends

MVDr. Milan Bednář, owner of the NEOvet veterinary clinic in Čáslav, is a man who does not accept compromises in his profession. As a veterinarian, he fights every day for the health of his animal patients, and as the owner of a dog and a cat, he faces the same challenges as thousands of other households. That is precisely why he has been a long-term user of central vacuuming. In our interview, he explains why he considers the system a standard part of modern, healthy living.

Doctor, you meet pet owners every day. From a hygiene point of view, what do you see as the biggest challenge when we share our home with an animal companion?

From the perspective of veterinary medicine, the biggest challenge is not what we can see at first glance, such as hair on the carpet. The real enemy is what we call organic dust – a mixture of microscopic skin particles, dried saliva and dust-mite droppings. These particles are extremely light and can easily become airborne during ordinary cleaning, rising into the breathing zone and triggering chronic inflammation or skin problems in sensitive individuals. The goal of modern hygiene should therefore not simply be a home that looks clean, but genuinely clean air.

What actually happens to dust mites, parasite eggs or bacteria collected by a conventional vacuum cleaner compared with what happens when they disappear into a central vacuum pipe system?

This is where we come to a fundamental difference. A conventional vacuum cleaner essentially becomes a mobile reservoir of pathogens, for example viruses, bacteria, moulds or parasites. Parasite eggs or bacteria remain in the bag in a warm, dark environment, where they may continue to multiply as the vacuum operates and the motor heats up. Each time you switch it on again, some of these microscopic particles can then be blown back into the room. In a central vacuum system, the journey is one-way and irreversible. Everything you pick up through the hose travels through the pipework directly to the central unit in the utility room. After filtration, the air is exhausted outside the building, so there is no recirculation and dust is not stirred back into the room. As a result, nothing is returned to the living area.

Many people use vacuum cleaners with the best filters available, yet there is still a typical pet smell in the house. Why is that, and why is a conventional vacuum powerless in this situation?

A conventional vacuum cleaner, even one fitted with a top-quality HEPA filter, effectively acts as an "aroma diffuser" with the opposite of the desired effect. Even the best filter can stop only solid particles, whereas odours are gases that no mechanical filter can block. When organic dirt is collected in the vacuum container, the motor warms it up and blows warm air saturated with pet odours back into the room. As I mentioned earlier, a central vacuum solves this problem permanently by exhausting the air outside the house.

Do you encounter animals in your practice that are themselves allergic to dust or dust mites? Can a central vacuum help them?

It may surprise some people, but animals suffer from these allergies just like humans do. In dogs and cats, they most commonly appear as persistent itchy skin, chewing of the paws or ear inflammation. For these patients, an environment cleaned with a central vacuum can be a huge benefit. The high suction power allows you to clean pet beds much more deeply, while at the same time you do not stir up dust during cleaning for the animal to breathe in directly. If you eliminate these triggers from the home, you can often significantly reduce the amount of medication required, which is always the better path for the animal's health.

Animals are often afraid of noise. How do your pets react to central vacuuming?

Fear of vacuum cleaners is common in animals because their hearing is much more sensitive and they perceive the high-pitched motor noise as a threat. In our home, the central unit is located in the utility room, so in the living area you hear only the quiet sound of air flowing through the nozzle. My dog and cat simply carry on sleeping in their usual places while we clean because that aggressive sound trigger is missing. The absence of noise and vibration is invaluable for the overall sense of calm in the home.

Doctor, when did you first hear about central vacuuming, what convinced you that you needed it at home, and why did you choose Husky?

I had known about the system for some time, but the turning point came when we were planning our own house. I wanted a high standard of hygiene for both my family and our animals. As a doctor, I know that animals bring a specific biological load into the home and that conventional vacuuming is, in this respect, a never-ending battle. What convinced me completely was the health logic behind the system – with a central vacuum, you do not blow the air back into the room, so allergens are not stirred up but disappear out of the living area and outside the house. Do you have any favourite accessories at home that make coat care easier?

My clear favourite is the special brush for vacuuming hair directly from the coat. It is much more effective than collecting hair from the floor afterwards. Because the system is quiet, our dog treats it almost like a pleasant massage. It is also excellent for the animal's skin and helps prevent eczema by allowing the skin to breathe better.

What would you say to people who are building a house and wondering whether a central vacuum is a luxury or a necessity?

I would recommend that they do not look at a central vacuum as an ordinary appliance, but as a key element of a healthy home. We often spend thousands on things that are simply visible, yet the quality of the air we breathe matters far more to our lives. For pet owners, it is simply a necessity that pays them back every day in the form of a clean environment without odours and allergens.
